Rain Cancels AOTFC vs Aliraqi Game

In an unfortunate turn of events, constant rain preceding 1 June cause the cancellation of the AOTFC vs Aliraqi supporters game.

Even though the day was not wet, the ToowongFootball Club and Brisbane City Council decided the field was not in an acceptable condition for play, therefore we had no option but to cancel the game.

MEDIA RELEASE
Australian and Iraqi Supporters to Clash in Friendly Football Match

23 May 2008
PEACE is about to break out between Australia and Iraq – on the soccer pitch at least. As most people know, Australia is playing Iraq in a World Cup qualifier at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday June 1. What many people don’t know is this will be the second football (soccer) game between the countries on the very same day.

Some dedicated supporters of the Socceroos and the Iraq football team have organised a friendly football match only hours before the main game.

The Australian supporters’ team, known as Aussies on Tour Football Club (AOTFC), is made up from members of the number one football forum in Australia, http://www.kickoff.com.au/.
The team has already played a triangular series in Germany at the 2006 World Cup, played a Thai team in Bangkok during the 2007 Asian Cup, and also games against Hyundai A League supporters teams, Lokomotiv Cove (Sydney), Jet Squadron (Newcastle), Dinamo Marinators (Central Coast) and Den FC (Queensland).

AOTFC game organiser Terry Hands is looking forward to the game with the Iraqi supporters.
“Our team has a philosophy of bridging cultural divides through the common world language that is football. Our unique football community mixes the elements of sport, fair play, fun and friendly competition to bring people together from all walks of life”.

Mr Hands had organised the Iraq supporters’ team through the Iraqi internet forum http://www.aliraqi.org./

“They have jumped at the chance to represent their country in this challenge and we are looking forward to a fantastic experience for both teams. What usually happens with these fixtures is we arrive as strangers and go away as true friends”.

The match is to be played at the home of Toowong Soccer Club, Dunmore Park, Auchenflower starting at 12:45 pm. Spectators are very welcome, and due to it’s vicinity to Suncorp Stadium, the game makes an ideal curtain raiser to the Socceroos fixture later that evening.

AOTFC 1 - Sunbelt Asia United 2

AUSSIES ON TOUR FOOTBALL CLUB (ASIAN CUP)
vs Sunbelt Asia United
14 July 2007. Bangkok, Thailand.

[Back Row] Stevenine, KaiserChief, Wallnuts, Guyza, Jozo, Macca, Sparke83, Liam, Gordo.
[Front Row] MathewKenna, Anto, Cbead (c), Tait, Longy, Ianski, Eric

Aussies On Tour FC have gone down fighting in the extreme heat and humidity of Bangkok, to the well drilled outfit of Sunbelt Asia United FC. Very much like the team's initial games in Germany, half of the AOTFC players met each other for the first time only minutes before the game.

The first half saw the Sunbelt team dictate a lot of play and had several chances to score early. The AOT team, still getting to know each other, played nevously and were guilty of some fundamental errors which reduced their effectiveness to attack. The first goal came from a backline mishap which gifted the Sunbelt team with possession near the 18 yard box and they put away the chance to go 1-0 up after about 15 minutes.

The Aussies galvanised after this and some sparkling footbal from Tait and Eric lead to some chances which went begging. What looked like a definate Sunbelt hand ball in the penalty area was denied by the referee despite the AOTFC protests. Keeper Ianski made some terrific saves in the first half, but unfortunately at the 34th minute, a seemingly innocuous shot from outside the area rolled over his arms and into the net for Sunbelt's second goal. Sunbelt kept up the pressure, but some class defensive work from new guys like Liam, Jozo and Wallnuts kept them at bay until half time.

Halftime score 2-0 to Sunbelt Asia United.

At halftime captain Cbead encouraged the team to keep their heads up, we were playing a well drilled and structured team that played week in and out, and were matching them in many areas of thr game. We also stressed to play to our normal positions, and to tighten up the defence by playing a deeper backline with a sweeper to repel their forward attacks. We also put Macca in as Keeper with Ianski playing in the right back position.

The tactic change paid benefits as AOTFC controlled more ball after the break, with the backline being well directed by Guyza who never shut up. The extra possession allowed the midfield to gain many metres in the middle and the flanks which gave the forward players of Stevenine, KaiserChief and Tait several chances on goal. In the 70th minute Longy stole possession from a Sunbelt player near halfway and weaved his way through the defence, to send a pass across to Stevenine who smashed in the goal to bring the score to 2-1.

In the 76th minute, the Sunbelt Japanese striker got through on goal and was felled by a challenge from Guyza in the area. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty to Sunbelt. The spot kick was taken and Macca dived to his right to brilliantly save.

The game became very open with AOT pressing hard for an equaliser, as well as Sunbelt pushing to put the game in the bag. A rocket of a shot from KaiserChief was somehow saved by the Sunbelt keeper late in the game.

The fulltime whistle went (at 80 minutes) and the game was over, a 2-1 victory to Sunbelt Asia United. Everyone who played for AOTFC can hang their heads high... we had 8 players we met for the first time today who fitted into the team seamlessly, and played the game exactly how we always play, hard and fair..

A big thank you to Sunbelt Asia United and their organiser Tytus for the opportunity for AOTFC to play another international, and the spirit their team played the game. Once again we learnt that football can bring together people from all parts of the world regardless of race, religion or language barriers, and the experience for us was totally enjoyable.

Fans Day Tournament June 2, 2007

AUSSIES ON TOUR FOOTBALL CLUB
(Fans Day, Sydney 2 June 2007)
Runners Up
[Back row L to R] meatpopsicle, TheBigMan, cbead, Guyza, BigKris, Ianski
[Front row L to R] Tezza, MathewKenna, go_scottie, Angie, Rusty2

AOTFC competed in the Fans Day Tournament, a round robin event comprising AOTFC... Lokomotiv Cove (Sydney FC supporters) and The Marinators (Central Coast Mariners supporters). The games where held at the Tempe Reserve in Sydney

MATCH ONE: Lokomotiv Cove vs The Marinators

The first game was the local derby and the Marinators took the field with 2 AOTFC players, Ianski as goalkeeper and go-scottie playing an unfamiliar role at fullback. The Loko Cove team started strongly and created many chances in the first half, but where repelled time and again by last ditch defence and some brilliant saves from Ianski. The Cove took the lead late in the first half and went to the break 1-0 in front.

The second half saw some more energy and fight from the Marinators, and although the Cove had more chances, it was Eggy from the Marinators who levelled the scores halfway through the second half, and it looked likely the Marinators could well scrape through with a draw. However, the equalizer seemed to sting the Cove into action and soon thereafter they scored to deservedly take the game 2-1.

MATCH TWO: AOTFC vs The Marinators

The second game began and ended with AOTFC playing with only 10 men against the Marinators who had a full compliment due to some players from Loko Cove filling in. The game began in a cautious manner, but it was the AOTers who produced the best chances. Near the end of the first half, our token female Angie delivered a pin point through ball to her brother Cbead, who rounded the keeper and with his left foot slotted away his maiden goal in the gold and green colours. There was much rejoicing in the team, as Cbead's goal-less monkey was finally off his back. The score remained 1-0 at half time.

The second half saw the AOTFC players gelling better and producing some fine football. Big Kris, Angie, Cbead and Rusty2 began to dictate terms in midfield, and our defensive trio Tezza, BigMan and Guyza along with Ianski made sure that no chances where going to get through. Go_scottie and meatpopsicle began to capitalise on the midfield dominence and gun striker go_scottie scrambled a dusty goal- mouth shot to put AOTFC up by two goals. After some further sustained pressure, go_scottie put the game beyond doubt with a fine chip from the edge of the 18 yard box into the back of the net giving the Marinators keeper no chance. The final score of 3-0 was the team's first ever clean sheet, and equalled it's highest winning margin. And this with only 10 men!

MATCH THREE: THE FINAL: AOTFC vs Lokomotiv Cove

As the Marinators could not feature in the final, it was decided to forego the AOTFC vs Cove group match and move directly to the final. The final was played over 4 x 20 minute quarters. The AOTFC secured two Marinators to play for the team in the final (Eggy and Tiger), which gave us one sub. Later in the game, MathewKenna arrived and donned the boots for the first ever time for AOTFC.

First Quarter:
All the positive energy which came from defeating the Marinators was soon lost by the AOTFC team as they went down by a goal within a few minutes, followed by a second, followed by a third goal, all within the first 20 minutes. The break had done the Loko Cove the world of good, and unlike their game against the Marinators, they put away most of their chances with surety. It wasn't all gloom though, as AOT where matching the Cove in general play, however could not put away any of the chances created. And although going to the first break 0-3 down, the team was far from discouraged and talked only about a comeback.

Second Quarter
AOTFC came out firing in the second stanza, and began to dictate the terms of the game. More chances were created, initiated by Big Kris and helped by Cbead, and that pressure finally was rewarded with a penalty for handball against the Loko Cove. Go_scottie came to the spot and gave the keeper no hope by neatly putting it away off the right post. This seemed to spur on the AOTers and soon thereafter a brilliant lead up from midfield propelled Angie and Rusty2 forward up the left flank, and they skilfully played the ball to each other mesmerizing the defenders before Rusty2 cooly slotted the ball into the net. In doing so, he became the youngest goal scorer for the team at only 15. 2-3 at the halftime break and it was well and truly 'game on'.

Third Quarter
The Loko Cove team came out determined and began to dictate the game into the second half. After about five minutes their dominance was rewarded with a goal which took the score to 4-2 in their favour. It seemed that all the goals where only going to be scored at the southern end, as all six goals had come from that one end only. Fatigue, and lack of subs was starting to get to the AOTFC team but the guys kept on putting in hard. The defence of Guyza, Big Man, Tezza and Ianski came into their own during this quarter as they quelled many Cove attacks, with some spectacular saves from Ianski. When AOT finally got some possession, a free flowing move sent striker meatpopsicle through on goal, who duly slotted away his maiden goal for AOTFC and put them right back into the game. 3-4 at 3/4 time.

Final Quarter
Both teams came out firing for the last 20 minutes, both knowing this game was up for grabs. The game became very open and although both teams were showing signs of fatigue they kept up the intensity. Mathew Kenna had arrived and was thrown into the pressure cooker for his AOTFC debut. The quarter saw goal mouth scrambles and desperate defences keeping the opposition out. AOTFC conceded a corner, and the ball sailed past the far post, when one of the Cove's female players, standing just about on the goal line, had the ball hit her knee, and from an impossible angle the ball went between the defence and the post in for a goal to put them up 5-3. It became desperate for AOTFC now and the team pushed forward. With 5 minutes to play, meatpopsicle carved his way through the defence and neatly slotted away another, to make the score 4-5. The final few minutes saw further attack and counter attack, with defensive desperation, but as the final whistle sounded it gave the Lokomotive a narrow but deserved victory against AOTFC.
Lokomotiv Cove 5 vs AOTFC 4 (Meatpopsicle 2, go_scottie [pen], Rusty2 goals)

A few interesting facts and figures from the day:
go_scottie with 3 goals took his tally to 8 for AOTFC
Guyza and go_scottie remain the only two players to have played in every AOTFC game
Ianski (and the AOTFC defence) secured AOTFC's first ever clean sheet
meatpopsicle, Rusty2 and Cbead scored their maiden goals for AOTFC
MathewKenna, Angie made their debuts for AOTFC
In the two round robin tournaments AOTFC have played, they won their first game by 3 goals and lost their second game by one goal
