Happy days ... Cahill and co. are heading to South Africa

It's official, we have qualified for our third World Cup finals appearance and second consecutive following on from our successful 2006 campaign.

So what does this mean for football in Australia? Sure the impact of qualification was not as historic or emotional as last time around but the impacts of qualification must not be underestimated. In such a competitive sporting market, undoubtedly the most competitive anywhere in the world where punters have 4 football codes to choose from, it is essential that we continue to perform at the highest level.

Qualification not only encourages more commercial interest from sponsors and commerical arrangements hence more money in the game, but a massive boost from the grass level roots up both in playing and coaching numbers and attendances at domestic football games including the A-League and state leagues.

Increased interest will also bring higher TV ratings which of course brings more advertising to the game plus the likelihood that the next TV deal will be increased following the introduction of 2 new A-League teams in the next season with the likelyhood of 2 more the following season.

So the message to you the football community is to continue supporting the game where possible, the more we contribute off the pitch the more we are planting seeds for a successful future in the world game.

With a little luck, our qualification will help our cause to host the world cup for ourselves which is something only a few short years ago few would have dared to dream.
