The age old bug bare of the football fan directed their way from fans of other sports and little understanding of the round ball game, "0-0, nothing happens thats bloody boring".
To the uninitiated football is a sport with low scoring and a certain rule called "offside" which makes little sense. To the football fan, often these games provide the most entertainment. A tense 0-0 draw particuarly in situations where much is at stake finds fans from both teams gritting their teeth in the moment of expectation of a goal from which tides of emotions flow.
Part of the appeal for football fans who understand how other sports work is that the emotion felt from a goal far outweighs a try in league and union or a goal in AFL because so many are typically scored that the level of emotion is not matched.
Compare this to a goal in football, the crucial world cup qualifier goal, the goal to take the lead against all the odds, the goal scored completely against the run of play and even better the goal your team scores to take the lead when you are supporting your team away from home.
Even without scoring there is the build up and expectation whether that be the excitement of potentially scoring or the fear of conceding.
For me personally this understanding came from playing the game at a young age and i continue to do so now into my thirties, the sport that is football is easy to understand because it flows but the true understanding comes from understanding that many high and low points come from incidents not involving goals... The send off, the challenge the ref didnt see, the offside call that wasnt offside, the atmosphere in the stands all make the experience of being a football fan one wouldnt change for the world.
