Best news ever.

FOOTBALL fans hoping to cheer on the Socceroos at next year's World Cup in South Africa have less than three weeks to stake a claim for tickets set aside for Australia.

Applications for seats in the official Australian supporters' allocation close on January 13 and, as of yesterday, thousands were still available.

A Football Federation Australia spokesman said: ''The [federation's] ticket allocation is the best chance local fans have of securing a ticket to the FIFA World Cup 2010 as there is a specific allocation available only to Australian fans.

''The urgency is that applications close soon for the Australia-only ballot so fans should make their minds up now if they are considering going to South Africa.''

Any unsold tickets after January 13 will be diverted into a central FIFA ticket pool. ''If [people] decide in March or April that they want to attend, the only option available will be the general FIFA ballot, which will contain fans from all over the world competing for any tickets they can get,'' the federation's spokesman said.

''That's why we are urging our fans to commit now, to give themselves the best chance of cheering on the Socceroos live as they take on Germany, Ghana and Serbia in the group stages and hopefully other world football giants in the knockout stages.''

Tickets for Australian supporters can be applied for online at www.footballaustralia.com.au.

Travel packages are also available from Total Sports Travel, which is a FIFA-licensed tour operator, at www.totalsportstravel.com.au.

Australia's first World Cup match will be against Germany in Durban on June 13.
