Brisbane Roar young gun Tommy Oar says he is relishing the chance to fly to Holland for a trial at an Eredivisie club at the completion of the A-League season – but admits he’s on a steep learning curve.
Eager to tone down the hype surrounding him, the 18-year-old – who has signed with Dutch super agent Rob Jansen – insists he has accomplished nothing yet in his brief career and will be a starry-eyed pupil when he sets foot in Europe.
“The plan is go head off there for a few months once Roar’s season is over,” Oar said. “It’s pretty exciting because Holland has a great technical league with a big ascent on developing young players, so going there even for a trial can only benefit my career.
“I haven’t really accomplished anything yet in the game. It’s all a learning experience for me and I’m just grateful to have broken into the Roar side this season. I’ve only played about 20 A-League games and the hard work starts now.”
Oar – likely to be called up for a second successive Socceroos squad appearance when Pim Verbeek takes a 23-man party into camp n the Gold Coast ahead of the March 3 clash with Indonesia - has been linked with Feyenoord.
But he played down the connection, insisting: “That’s news to me at this stage because I don’t think anything has been finalised yet with any club.
“That’s something that my agent will be assessing and taking care of.
“I still have another season after this one on my contract and I’d love to stay and win a title with Roar.
“But in football, you never really know what lies around the next corner. I'm just going along for the ride.”
Jansen counts Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt, Manchester United’s goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and former Netherlands international Patrick Kluivert in his stable, with the latter at the Roar on a short coaching stint.
The agent has a five-percent share holding in Roar and has also added ambitious Michael Zullo to his roster.
Oar likes the symmetry of the Holland-Australia link, with the Dutch influence on the Australian game starting at the top with Verbeek and trickling down.
“There’s obviously a huge connection there and a big influence right across our game and it’s no coincidence we have had lot of young players heading over there now to better themselves,” added the left winger, who has also been linked with FC Utrecht.
“The standards in Holland are excellent and it would be an awesome launching pad for anybody.”
Oar is eager to keep his meteoric rise in perspective.
“Everything has happened pretty fast for me,” said the rookie. “But things can change quickly too. You have to be careful not to get too far ahead of yourself. I’m going to make sure I don’t get over confident.”
While predicting a rebound season for Roar next season, Oar hasn’t given up hope on the struggling club sneaking into this season’s finals. It is four points out of the play off places and must beat Adelaide away on Saturday and then win in Perth the following Saturday to have any chance.
“We’ve lost a lot of core players this season ad that’s always going to make it tough,” he added. “When you lose players like Charlie Miller and Craig Moore it’s something you can’t just shrug off.
“While it’s terrible to be without those sorts of big names it does open the way for other players to break through and show what they van do.”
Oar believes the lacerating criticism of coach Ange Postecoglou’s management style has been unfair, adding:
“There have been a lot of changes and Ange is looking for the long term rather than the short term.
“Our win over Sydney last week showed we are moving in the right direction. The criticism has been uncalled for.
“It’s hardly been an ideal season but hopefully we’ll benefit long-term. People need to give Ange time. He’s come in during a crisis and he needs time.”

of the youngsters i.e djite/burns/rukavitsya i think this guy is the one with the most potential - quick, direct, great cross and can shoot too... he needs to work on some areas of his game of course but europe would improve it - i.e: being a bit less prdictable with his left foot
